The Saturn Award Nominations Buck Some Serious Trends

The nominations for the Saturn Awards are out, and they barely resemble the other award shows.

Let’s get this out-of-the-way immediately: True Detective is not up for a Saturn Award. True Detective’s very limited time at the awards this season is over. Not only is the series itself not nominated, no actor from True Detective is nominated in any character. In fact, nobody that has ever been involved with True Detective is nominated either. So why is this news worthy?

The Saturn Award nominee list looks almost nothing like the other award shows, including the rather bold Independent Spirit Awards. The serious amount of snubs is just as worth discussing as the actual nominees. Spotlight, Fargo, and Beasts of no Nation were all passed over. While neither Fargo nor Beasts of no Nation have been receiving much love, it’s surprising to not see Spotlight.

To be fair, the Saturn Awards don’t usually adhere to what the establishment usually finds award worthy. For example, actors from both Ash vs. the Evil Dead and Jessica Jones are nominated, two series that would have to shake the studio system to its core to win, let alone get nominated in the first place. Hannibal is also nominated in multiple categories. Don’t they know they’re not supposed to acknowledge Hannibal at all?

If True Detective was going to be nominated for a non-guild award, it would have been the Saturn’s. They obviously don’t care about current award trends, and they deserve some serious love for that.

Next: True Detective season two ended six months ago.

Still, would it have been too much to throw True Detective some love? Just a little would have sufficed.

The Saturn Awards will take place in June.
