Next Week’s Girls is Going to be Big for Marnie

The next episode of Girls promises a big surprise that might not actually be a surprise.

Girls is in a weird space right now. Until last Sunday’s episodeGirls’ fifth season was one of the stronger seasons. On one hand, Jessa and Adam are heading in an interesting direction, while Hannah is in self-destruction mode like always and Shosh’s storyline is turning sour. Ray has also been criminally underused.

And then there’s Marnie. Marnie wasn’t in last week’s episode, but she looks to be getting next week’s episode all to herself. Check out the preview:

More from Show Snob

Marnie is having some marriage trouble. This is, of course, absolutely no surprise. Desi is an unbalanced mess and we’ve already seen them clash a few times. This preview shows no other main character except for Marnie, so don’t expect to see a resolution to Hannah’s issues for a little while longer.

The fact that Marnie isn’t getting along with Desi isn’t the surprising part, it’s who she sees at the very end of the preview. We don’t get a look at him, but it’s not hard to figure out who it is — it’s Charlie. Charlie, played by Christopher Abbott, left Girls after the second season. It was a move that made sense, since his character’s arc that season was ridiculous.

We were supposed to believe that he disappeared and then, all of a sudden, became a super-successful app developer with his own company. Please.

Next: Watch the trailer for the fifth season of Veep.

Abbott was previously seen on the set of Girls’ fifth season, though it wasn’t clear whether or not he was there just visiting or to return as Charlie. Marnie’s reaction in the above trailer just about proves that Charlie is coming back. We just don’t know what the circumstances are or how long he’ll be around.
