Here’s a New Trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s The Sea of Trees
Another international trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s The Sea of Trees is here.
Matthew McConaughey may have a packed 2016 and an exciting 2017 coming up, but there is still the little matter of last year’s Sea of Trees to tend do. The Sea of Trees, directed by famous arthouse director Gus Van Sant, was booed at Cannes and hasn’t really been seen since. Colin Farrell’s The Lobster, also a little-seen movie from last year, at least has a solid release date.
A new trailer for The Sea of Trees has been released, this time for France. The movie actually has a release date there, unlike North America. Not to fret, the trailer is not dubbed in French — it just has French subtitles. Check out the new trailer below:

We get a better look at Matthew McConaughey and Nicole Kidman’s fractures marriage in the trailer. Their relationship is on the rocks when she is diagnosed with cancer. From there, McConaughey’s character winds up in Japan’s infamous suicide forest and meets Ken Watanabe. This particular trailer is especially compelling, so it will actually be interesting to see how this all becomes a supposed train wreck.
Like most Gus Van Sant films, The Sea of Trees looks gorgeously shot. It’s almost difficult to believe that its reputation is so poor. As of yet, there is no American trailer for it and it has no release date here. The studio likely doesn’t have the confidence to release in the states after the horrible reception at Cannes.
How the film performs abroad could have an impact on when it comes stateside, if it even happens at all. It’s odd to think that a film that was at least partially shot here may not actually release at all, especially with a major cast and American director. Matthew McConaughey’s presence may not be enough to save this one.
Next: Nic Pizzolatto will probably take 2016 off.
French audiences will only have to wait until April 27th to see if The Sea of Trees is really as bad as the critics say.
