Vanity Fair Thinks Bosch is a Better True Detective

Vanity Fair puts its weight behind the second season of Amazon’s Bosch.

True Detective is not going to be around for a little while, as it has been all-but confirmed that HBO is giving Nic Pizzolatto time to work on season three. There won’t be any rushing out the door this time. In the mean time, there are a slew of suitable True Detective replacements that fans can spend some time with while playing the waiting game.

Bosch is an Amazon series based on novels by Michael Connely. The series follows Detective Bosch of the LAPD. Its first season was a fairly standard cop drama that had a bit of trouble distinguishing itself form the rest of the pack. The second season, however, is supposed to be a real gem, and Vanity Fair thinks that it is everything that True Detective season two should have been.

True Detective’s status as top-tier crime drama ensures that every show in that genre for the next few years is inevitably going to be compared to it. That goes double for season two. Right off the bat Vanity Fair’s review makes it abundantly clear how they felt about True Detective — they refer to it as having “succumbed to sadistic, self-pitying, mood-mongering, garbage-barge bloat.”

That’s Entertainment Weekly level hate right there.

Check out the trailer for the second season of Bosch:

Bosch hasn’t made waves yet. It’s second season is currently sitting at a 76, but it’s only pulling from seven reviews. That is, however, in-line with the first season. The second season premiered on March 11th, which would have been more than enough time for more reviews to come in if Bosch was on more people’s radars. As it stands right now, it’s not.

Next: Michelle Monaghan will star in a Boston Marathon bombing drama.

TV is filled to the brim with cop and detective shows — it’s one of the most popular genres on television. There are usually more bad ones that good ones, though they all seem to attract eyes. For those out there that have seen Bosch, would you be comfortable comparing it to True Detective? Is it actually better?
