Colin Farrell Spilled the Beans on His Fantastic Beasts Character

Colin Farrell talked about his role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at a Fashion Week event.

Colin Farrell didn’t get much attention for his role as Ray Velcoro, Father of the Year, in True Detective, but he’s getting a lot of it for his next project. As we’ve previously discussed, Farrell will play Percival Graves, an Auror, in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Information on his character has been light, though he did get a nice spotlight in the latest trailer.

Although the Fantastic Beasts team isn’t too keen on reveling details just yet, Farrell himself doesn’t seem to interested in staying as quiet. While in Mexico City for a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week event — yes, of all places — Colin Farrell dropped a few new nuggets about his character. He had this to say to the Associated Press:

"“I’m basically there to investigate crimes against wizards, against any type of dark magic among the wizarding community…I love the Harry Potter films, I love them. I’ve never read the books, my sister read them all. I know, I’m a slacker.”"

He also added that Graves is “an incredibly powerful wizard,” but we knew that part already. As far as we know, Graves is one of the good guys, though the film seems to be setting him up as one of the main antagonists against Newt. He also seems fairly broody if that means anything.

We don’t know all that much about Fantastic Beasts, and Warner Bros. has been doing a good job at controlling information. There’s not much they can do about an actor speaking to the press, though nothing Farrell said was revelatory. Still, it’s exciting to be getting a better sense of his character.

Harry Potter fans will also likely be happy to hear that Farrell is a fan of the films, though he loses a few points for not having read the books. Hopefully his character will be sticking around for the other movies.
