Angie Tribeca Will be Taking on True Detective for Real

Angie Tribeca promises to seriously spoof True Detective’s second season.

For the uninitiated, Angie Tribeca is a comedy on TBS that spoofs overly serious detective dramas. The current easiest target for that specific genre would of course be True Detective, and the first season took a couple of shots at True Detective as a whole. The second season will have a tighter focus when it comes to spoofing, it seems.

At an Angie Tribeca event in Los Angeles, showrunner Ira Ungerleider spoke about the plans for season two and how it will take from True Detective’s second season:

"“…So since all of us were watching these dark, moody cable dramas like ‘True Detective’ and ‘Fargo,’ wouldn’t it be ‘of today’ to take the show in a serialized, complex [direction]? You know those shows where you’re watching and halfway through you go, ‘I don’t know what’s happening at all’? With ‘True Detective’ [Season 2], by the end, you’re like, ‘I don’t know what happened at all.'”"

A common criticism of True Detective’s second season was that it was difficult to follow — the season’s focus was spread to thin. Part of that comes from having so many characters to keep track of, but some plot lines were dropped with little fanfare only to be picked up again later, like the mystery of the Crow Man.

Some of those criticisms were valid, while others seem to stem from a disappoint that season two wasn’t season one. At least the end result might turn into something hilarious on Angie Tribeca. The second season will be needlessly complex in order to properly spoof True Detective.

According to Ungerleider, it’s even difficult for the actor to keep track of what’s going on in Angie Tribeca’s second season:

"“So we thought it would be fun to be purposefully confusing with an overall conspiracy. It’s ridiculously complicated. The actors are like, ‘I can’t even follow it, and I’m on the show.'”"

This could be very funny if done right. The second season of Angie Tribeca is set to premiere in June, and it sounds like it will be a fine way to kill some time this summer while True Detective takes some time off.
