Is Beyonce’s Lemonade project worth an Emmy nod for HBO?

Beyoncé is one of the reigning queens of pop culture, and everything she does usually gets heaps of attention. Enter her new album, Lemonade, which HBO debuted as a “visual album” a few days ago. Lemonade was shown to the world as an hour-long special presentation on HBO, and that means it’s eligible for an Emmy.

That’s likely something that HBO took into consideration when all the pieces were first falling into place. According to Variety, HBO will officially submit Lemonade in Variety Special Category. It’s a bold move, but on that’s perfectly suited to both HBO and Beyoncé.

There will still have to be a decision as to whether or not it will actually be accepted, but there’s no real reason to believe that it won’t be. Beyoncé is a megastore, and Lemonade was legitimately compelling presentation. Its chances of actually winning or another matter, especially because it’s much too early to actually see a list of nominees.

Considering Lemonade’s current level of acclaim, it might actually be something of an upset if it at least doesn’t score a nomination. It might be a bit cynical, but award shows do have a penchant to act as popularity contests. And right now, there are few things as popular as Lemonade.

As Variety notes, it’s going to be a bit of mess for HBO to sort out everyone involved with Lemonade and if they can join in on the nomination. With Lemonade in the mix, the Emmy’s are going to be an interesting animal, especially if Beyoncé ends up winning.
