Get Ready for Some Tough Tension on Game of Thrones

The next episode of Game of Thrones will pit Jamie against The Blackfish for the rule of Riverrun.

It looks like Game of Thrones is finally going to put Jamie to good use. Sending him to Dorne with Bron was a waste of storyline and ultimately went nowhere; it’s like it never happened at this point. Thankfully Jamie will finally get back to having some character development with the next episode, “The Broken Man.”

This trip to Riverrun was set up last episode in semi-rushed fashion. It was reveled that The Blackfish, Catelyn’s uncle, is alive and was able to retake Riverrun. It was also revealed that his nephew, Edmure Tully, is still alive following the events of The Red Wedding. Check it out:

We finally get back to Jon and Sansa, and it looks like Sansa has deepened her feelings about taking back Winterfell. We also get to see Lady Olenna really lay into Cersei in a satisfying way. Hopefully that won’t end up costing her in the future, but this is, after all, Game of Thrones.

There’s no sign of Arya, but since she had a major role in “Blood of my Blood” that’s not surprising. Daenerys and Bran are also both absent, though the episode will likely check in with at least one of them. The real meat here is Jamie’s meeting with The Blackfish, an event from the books that it looked like the series was going to skip over entirely. Before returning to King’s Landing, Jamie went through some serious character growth. This will hopefully be another chance for more of that.

Cersei is incapable of change, and when the two of them are together it’s like Jamie takes several steps backward.

Next: The next season of Game of Thrones will have fewer episodes.

The Edmure reveal may not end up bearing fruit on Game of Thrones for another couple of episodes, as it looks like “The Broken Man” will be focusing on Jamie and The Blackfish, not the Freys and The Blackfish. But we’ll see.
