Is True Detective Season Three Going to Happen?
Nothing is clear when it comes to True Detective season three
The story of True Detective’s production is an interesting one. Originally worked on for several years and then brought to HBO, the first season was a supreme hit. The kind of hit that many networks don’t get. Compared to season one, the second season had very little time to get going. And that’s when it fell on his face.
Since then, HBO’s Doug Lombardo has stepped down. Lombardo shepherd True Detective along the way, and without him it’s not clear if new head of programming Casey Bloys is interesting in pursing a third season. Add to that a source told Variety that HBO likely wouldn’t return to True Detective.
But there’s more to tell here.

Matthew McConaughey not only wants the show back in general, but he also wants to revive Rust Cohle forTrue Detective season three. That’s a meaty idea that, and just the kind of thing that HBO could rally behind. The final decision would be up to creator Nic Pizzolatto, but right now it feels like there is very little to lose.
There’s also the fact that True Detective has never actually been cancelled. When a series is cancelled, HBO always makes an announcement about it. We’re nearing the one year anniversary of True Detective season two’s premiere episode, and nothing has been said. That’s in stark contrast to what just happened with Vinyl.
Next: Vinyl stars are not pleased with cancellation.
Nic Pizzolatto is still signed with HBO, but that doesn’t mean there has to be a True Detective season three. It is, however, very odd that the show continues to float around in limbo. And now Matthew McConaughey has brought a renewed interest to it. The future of True Detective is not certain, but anything could happen at this point.
