Will Game of Thrones Season Six Follow the Usual Release Schedule?

Now that season six is over, all eyes are on the Blu-Ray release

Game of Thrones just aired it’s best season finale to date. “The Winds of Winter” not only moved the series on in important ways, it did so dramatically and often brilliantly. The next question is when the eventual DVD and Blu-Ray release will happen. Normally this wouldn’t be much of a question, but HBO recently switched things up a bit.

HBO decided to release Vinyl shortly after the season ended, bucking its usual trend of saving a season release until right before the next season aired on television. That has been the tried and true strategy to deal with Game of Thrones releases; saving them until a month or so before the next season. It, admittedly, does leave little time to catch up.

It’s not clear why HBO switched things up with Vinyl, but it could have been to get it out there as soon as possible so people would give it a second chance. Season six was a major season for Game of Thrones, and it will be the last one to feature the normal episode count of ten. But since we know there will be a seventh season, it’s not the same situation as Vinyl.

HBO won’t be talking about the home video release for a little while. It still might not be in their best interest to release it any sooner than usual, though it would be a nice treat for fans. The strict of Game of Thrones is going to shift in the next season, and that could be reason enough to ditch the old way of doing things.
