HBO Decides that it Doesn’t want any more Project Greenlight
HBO officially passes on more Project Greenlight
Once upon a time, Project Greenlight was a semi-revoulitonary movie making experiment for Ben Affleck and Mat Damon. That was a few years ago. Between then and now the series took an extended break, but its return hasn’t fared all that well. The initial idea for the series was for fledgling directors to be given a shot at directing their first film.
Project Greenlight first aired back in 2001 and revived in 2015, but HBO has decided that it’s just about had enough. HBO released a statement saying that they weren’t going to pursue anymore seasons of the series and that they only imagined “a one season revival,” something which perhaps Affleck and Damon weren’t too clear on, as Project Greenlight will now be shopped around to various streaming outlets.
HBO posted the full first episode of season four. You can watch it all here:

It’s not too difficult when, exactly, Project Greenlight lost its luster. The first couple of iterations were an interesting experiment that felt, somehow, vital. The documentary series didn’t really need to be revived, especially not by HBO where it would encounter the most comparisons to seasons that aired over ten years ago.
While this cancellation is far from good news, it could land Project Greenlight on a streaming network. That actually feels like a better fit for it than HBO, and perhaps the series could also be better served by having its episodes posted all at once for binge viewing.

The show has been able to maintain a generally stable critical reception, but it stopped being a ratings draw for HBO. Hopefully Damon and Affleck will be able to move the series somewhere else, though even if they’re ultimately unable to, Project Greenlight achieved what it set out to do some time ago. And at least that’s something.
