Could Westworld run for five Seasons?

There are plans for at least five seasons of Westworld

Westworld is less than a month from premiering and that means we have just about hit critical mass. HBO has been playing the newest trailer practically nonstop (as they should be) and we recently got a new look at the series through some released images. Westworld hasn’t begun yet but there are already plans floating around for the future.

According to an interview with the showrunners and James Marsden for Entertainment Weekly, there are five seasons of Westworld planned out. Apparently this is also part of the reason that production was originally delayed. Marsden says that the mysterious delay “wasn’t about getting the first 10 [episodes] done, it was about mapping out what the next 5 or 6 years are going to be.”

Westworld could be the next big mega hit for HBO, and given enough time it might be able to come close to what Game of Thrones has accomplished. It makes sense for a series so complex to have to plan out so many pieces in advance, but it does put an inordinate amount of stress on Westworld to perform well enough to merit the extra work. Fans who has been burned by Vinyl will be familiar with this particular feeling of cautious optimism.

On the other hand, it’s an exciting prospect that Westworld could be around for a long while. On the other, the hype is now so huge that it’s becoming doubtful that it could actually live up to it. Hopefully Westworld will be able to deliver on its promise. And if the first season isn’t a hit, will HBO allow it to time to grow? There is certainly no guarantee of that.

Next: HBO owns Creative Arts Emmys.

There is so much riding on Westworld that it feels almost reckless to put so much stock in its future, at least for potential fans. This could be a situation in which the hype proves to be too much. We’ll know more once the show premiers on October 2nd.
