Last night’s Westworld ratings are in, and they are mighty fine

For those that have been paying attention to Westworld for the past several months — it would have almost been difficult not to — this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Westworld ratings are here, and they bring good news. According to multiple sources, including Entertainment WeeklyWestworld premiered to just over 3 million viewers.

If you’re thinking that it’s a little early to have the ratings so soon, that’s because it is. Sensing good news, it’s possible that HBO and others involved were keen on getting the information out there. The success of Westworld should be celebrated. In fact, the new series premiered to ratings higher than any that HBO has seen in the past several years.

But yes, Game of Thrones did do better back in 2011.

That’s not really a fair comparison. Game of Thrones is based on a known property, while Westworld is coming from a cult film from the 70’s. With the show’s great start, Game of Thrones type ratings are not out of reach. Unless there is a drop off after the premiere (which can happen and does frequently) Westworld is well on its way to being the mega  hit that we all thought that it would be.

Even if there is a small drop off it could still recover, and even if it doesn’t the rating would still be respectable. This is the type of news that HBO would send out in a press release like what they did for The Night Of and Vice Principals over the summer. It will be interesting to watch the ratings going forward, though there aren’t any surprises expected in that department. This is a great show that people have been waiting for. It would be a shock if they decided to abandon it.
