Divorce gets more awkward in “Next Day.”

The first episode of Divorce featured not only a heart attack and drunken gunplay, it also began the process of the actual divorce. You now, what the series ostensibly is going to be about. Divorce didn’t hit it out of the park on its first outing, but it did set up a strong base on which to build on going forward. “Next Day” will continue the divorce fun, with Frances getting most of the negative attention.

More from Show Snob

We start off right where we left off: with Frances and Robert on opposite sides of their home’s screen door. We’ll also be getting the scene in which Robert packs all of Frances’ bras in a shopping bag, something which has been teased in previous trailers. It also looks like the two, plus Frances’ friends, will be visiting Nick in the hospital after his aforementioned heart attack. Turns out that just about everyone else knew who Julian was except for Robert.

It’s been made fully clear that Diane, played by Molly Shannon, is a little unhinged. It will be interesting to see where her marriage with Nick will go from here. Restraining order? Reconciliation? Divorce could use their relationship as a mirror for Frances and Robert.

Divorce has set itself up as a darkly comic series and “Next Day” will not break that early trend. We can assume from the title that the episode takes place both during the day when Robert finds out about Julian, as well as after. Heopfully we’ll get to see Julian again later this season, as Jemaiene Clement is always a joy to watch. Unfortunately, IMDB only lists him for a single episode. Don’t get your hopes up.

Next: Does Frances have to be likable?

Divorce may not have had a stellar first episode, but it did give more than enough set up for us to be excited for its future. The excellent performances also don’t hurt, of course.
