Could Veep Become HBO’s Longest Running Comedy?
Veep is the funniest American political show of all time. Could it become HBO’s longest running comedy?
There is no hyperbole in the above sentence: Veep is funnest American series to focus on politics. It’s also a constant award darling for HBO, winning multiple awards every season and five Emmys alone for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. It will soon be entering its sixth season, and there is no reason to believe that it will be slowing down anytime soon. By the way, consider this your official spoiler warning if you haven’t finished the fifth season yet. If that applies to you, what are you waiting for?
Veep season 6 will find Selina no longer in power. It could very well act as a semi new beginning for the series, forcing Selina to once more search for her place in the world. With all the benefits that an ex-president gets, of course. That leaves a lot of creative potential for Veep to tap not only in season 6, but for future seasons as well. Veep could use this as an opportunity to become not only HBO’s longest running comedy series, but also its most venerated.

Its biggest completion here will come from Curb Your Enthusiasm, a series that has a ninth series int he pipeline. That leaves a gap of several years between the two, and one that Veep will have to work hard to close. In the interest of fairness, it’s worth pointing out that Curb Your Enthusiasm season 9 is coming seven years after the previous season, and 16 since it first premiered.
There have been no hints or rumors that Veep will be winding down with season 6. If that were the case there surely would have been an announcement by now, so that means we can reasonably expect season 7 as well. Expecting anything after that would be akin to tempting fate, but Veep rolls season into season so easily that it can seemingly just keep going. And that would be totally fine with us.

If there’s any show on HBO that deserves the title and honor of longest running comedy, its Veep. Sorry, Curb diehards.
