Is Westworld’s Mysterious Co-Creator still Alive?
We learned in “The Stray” that Westworld has a co-creator that not even Bernard knew about.
We’re now three episodes into the first season of Westworld and there is plenty that we still don’t know. That’s an impressive feat, consideration that there is actually quite a bit of exposition going on in every episode. For every one thing we learn, two more mysteries appear. One of which was nonchalantly revealed in the latest episode, “The Stay.” Apparently Westworld had a co-creator that nobody knew about except for, it appears, Ford and now Bernard.
The man’s name is Arnold, a name that is heard earlier in the episode by a Host gone berserk. Specifically the Host that shot up the bar and had milk spill through his bullet holes. Arnold’s existence was scrubbed away from Westworld’s history by shadowy corporate entities after an incident. Ford offhandedly comments that Arnold is dead, but there is plenty of reason to believe that he may be lying.

For one, there wouldn’t be any real narrative reason for Westworld to bring up Arnold if he wasn’t going to factor in later. Not at this point, anyway. But that normal deductive reasoning isn’t all that fun. The way that Ford waves away his death is not convincing in the slightest, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is flat-out lying. He just might know for sure what actually happened, and there are parts of the park that aren’t heavily monitored. If they all were, the rocks with the labyrinth cut-outs wouldn’t have been a surprise to Elsie and Ashely.

Regardless of whether or not Arnold is alive in a traditional sense (murdering cyborg, anyone?) it’s obvious that his work will be casting a shadow over the rest of Westworld’s first season. He might end up holding the key to what exactly is going on with Hosts starting to remember their past lives.
In fact, you can probably count on it.
