Will HBO Renew Divorce?

We’re almost at the halfway point and HBO hasn’t decided whether or not to renew Divorce.

It wasn’t all that long ago that networks, HBO included, would wait until a season of television finished airing before they decided on whether or not to renew it. Things have changed. HBO has renewed several shows early, including High Maintenance. But why haven’t they decided to renew Divorce yet?

It’s true that Divorce has had some difficulty in finding an audience. The series is currently sitting at a 60 on Metacritic, which is about average. Critical reception isn’t the only factor when deciding the fate of a show, but according to Showbuzz Daily Divorce’s ratings have been up and down. A little rocky, in other words. That would mean that Divorce is not a yet a hit. If HBO believes in a show they have been known to give it a chance to grow, but a recent pattern of cancelling shows with low ratings and average to good critical scores puts the fate of Divorce in doubt.

The question of whether or not to renew Divorce is not the same as to whether or not Westworld will be renewed. One is a certainty. When it comes to critics, both High Maintenance and Insecure have been doing better. Both shows, it should be noted, are generally skewed at a younger audience.

There is a good show in Divorce that has slowly been making itself known. The first season only has five more episodes to go, and the fate of the series could very well hang on the balance of how they perform. At this point it looks like notice of an early renewal is unlikely, but hopefully HBO does decide to stick with it. There is territory worth exploring here.
