No, There Shouldn’t be a Westoworld and Game of Thrones Crossover

A Westworld and Game of Thrones Crossover would be an insult to both fandoms. And good taste.

Let’s get this out of the way: the only real resemblance that Westworld has to Game of Thrones is that it’s a genre show. That’s about where it ends, and they’re not even the same genre. Still, they’re both heavyweight dramas under HBO’s umbrella, and so it was only a matter of time until someone proposed the idea of a Westworld and Game of Thrones crossover. But it is, for sure, not a well thought out proposition.

it’s true that in the original film there are other worlds to visit besides Westworld — not that we’ll be seeing any of them in the series. It’s possible that they don’t even exist in the continuity in the series. That technically leaves room for something like Fantasyworld or Westwerosworld. Get it? Such a thing would be a campy exercise that would only lessen the impact of each show’s creative endeavors.

According to Entertainment Weekly this idea really got going when George R.R. Martin supposedly brought it up to Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, Westworld’s producers. To their credit the original idea does make a bit more sense: have a world, or area of Westworld, with Hosts based on Game of Thrones. But that would still make it the worst kind of pandering fan-service that could exist.

Nolan and Joy aren’t so keen on the idea, which is wise. The best case for a Game of Thrones crossover could only be that it’s a successful show that has made a cultural impact and is also on HBO. Westworld, however, is based on actual history. That is only one of countless potential problems.

Next: A Ford and Man in Black face off?

Both shows are far above this sort of crossover idea, so there’s thankfully no actual worry of it happening. It is understandable to get excited by such an idea, but it would do both shows such disservice.

Sometimes it’s good that creators are not at the whims of fans.
