Divorce Finally gets ugly in ‘Gustav.’

The preview for ‘Gustav’ finds Frances and Robert getting their affairs in order.

By this time it’s almost a joke that Divorce is about to be half over and there hasn’t actually been a divorce. That’s actually part of the charm of the series in that it wants to get to know these characters a little more before they pull out the big guns. But those guns are here, at least according to the preview for ‘Gustav.’

The shark lawyer that he feared is going to take the scene. He’s so well-known that Robert’s lawyer (that he can’t afford,) would lower his rate “just to be in court with him.” Max Broadkin wants Frances to basically start campaigning against Robert which leads to some frank sexual talk. All in all this preview doesn’t show much, but it does set the general tone. Robert is desperate and Frances is going to be very well prepared. Though she may not be prepared to be as vicious as Broadkin seems to want.

Just because the divorce proceedings have officially started doesn’t mean that things are going to go smoothly — they rarely do. And that’s just assuming that this is all going to culminate in an actual divorce. ‘Gustav’ is certainly heading in that direction, but we already know that Robert and Frances still love each other. The act of actually divorcing could end up doing the opposite, but it’s going to be a while until that becomes a possibility.

Next: HBO axes Any Given Wednesday, but not Bill Simmons.

Divorce so far has proven to be a solid dramady with Robert doing most of the comedic heavy-lifting. Frances still seems a little cold, though at least she has become easier to understand and empathize with. HBO hasn’t yet announced if they’re going to keep Divorce around, but it’s a show that deserves time to grow.
