Divorce Season 2 is Coming, and it Deserves it.

Divorce is getting the second season that it deserves.

It should not have come as a surprise that HBO decided to renew both Westworld and Insecure, both shows have done well and Westworld is on track to becoming a phenomenon. What was a little bit of a surprise, and a pleasant one, is that HBO decided to green light Divorce season 2.  The series hasn’t made waves like Insecure has, but it’s still a solid half hour of television that has only gotten better as its gone on.

We’ve already talked about how Divorce has taken inspiration — conscious or otherwise — from Girls. There is a familiar rhythm to Divorce that needs time to be play itself out, a similar situation to Girls. It’s heartening to see that HBO still puts value in smaller shows that tell more personal stories. It’s always possible that Divorce won’t make it to season 3, as was the case with Togetherness, but we can cross that bridge when it’s time.

More from Show Snob

There are still depths for Divorce to explore, and frankly, we would seriously miss Thomas Haden Church as Robert. This isn’t a show that is carried by Sarah Jessica Parker, and in fact, she doesn’t bring all that much to the role. But there is still potential there.

It’s surprising that Divorce hasn’t been the hit that we originally thought it was going to be. It’s possible that the subject matter itself turns some people off, or it’s possible Frances just isn’t likable enough. It will be interesting to see what changes in the second season, though we’ll have to polish off the first before we can really look ahead. There are four episodes left in the season, and that is enough time to offer up enough twists to keep things interesting.

Divorce is not a perfect show, and a second season isn’t necessarily going to make it one. But it doesn’t need to be, it just needs to show that it can grow. And it’s done that.
