The documentary, Bright Lights: Starring Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, was in the works before their deaths.

A polite way to describe the passing of Debbie Reynolds a day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher, would be “surreal.” There are other words that can be used, perhaps some that would be more appropriate. What was once set to be a celebration of two lives will now be tinged with a sense of mourning when HBO premieres its new documentary, Bright Lights: Starring Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.

It’s important to note that the doc had been in the works before their untimely passing. A piece over at Variety goes into what the filmmakers are currently dealing with and how HBO is going to move forward. Specifically, Variety spoke to Shelia Nevins, the president of HBO Documentary Films. Nevins accurately captures the general mood right now:

"“If this was a Hollywood script, no one would believe it…They just loved each other so much. The bond was just unbreakable.”"

The film has been finished for a little while now, having screened at Cannes and at the New York Film Festival. HBO has not scheduled a date for the documentary, and will reportedly find a time that is appropriate. According to Nevins, Fisher was apparently considering turning her latest memoir, The Princess Diarist, into an HBO special.

The passing of two so close to each other is an incredible act of tragedy. We still expect Bright Lights to premiere sometime next year, though it’s anyone’s guess as to when. We urge you to read the Variety piece in full, though it’s not exactly an easy read. The death of both Carrie and Fisher has unsurprisingly been “overwhelming to all those involved” with the documentary.

We’ll have more on Bright Lights: Starring Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher in the new year.
