HBO is Ending up on a lot of Critics’ Best of 2016 Lists
The year-end lists are here, and HBO isn’t doing too shabby.
It was a pretty good year for television. That goes not only for HBO, but for many other network as well. By the way, if you haven’t watched Stranger Things or The OA on Netflix, we highly recommend that you do so. That also goes for Fleabag over on Amazon. HBO, however, has the distinction of not only making multiple critics’ lists for the best of 2016 TV, but also having multiple entries per list. And since we’re not talking about award shows here, it’s all good news.
Pretty much every entrainment outlet has their own list, so we’re only going to highlight a few of them. Collider, for example, points out Westworld, Game of Thrones, and Veep. For what it’s worth, Veep is ranked higher than the other two. Our feelings on Veep have been made pretty clear, so we’re just going to leave it at that.

Polygon was a little more unorthodox. Several editors put together their own lists, with Game of Thrones, Veep, Insecure, and even High Maintenance making an appearance. Westworld, however, was completely skipped over. That could mean that Polygon is an outlier, or that the first season wasn’t quite as successful as we had thought. Probably the former.
Lastly, let’s take a look at the official Roger Ebert site just to get something a little different. They have a more typical single list, with multiple spots for HBO. Veep, Westworld, Insecure, and The Night Of all get singled out in the top 10. The Night Of certainly deserves the attention, and it’s great to see Togetherness as a runner-up. There’s also an appearance by Silicon Valley in the full top 20.

It’s really no surprise at all to see so many HBO shows making the rounds, though it is great to see some of the lesser ones, such as The Night Of and Togetherness. The year is almost over, but we expect to see more lists into the early days of 2017. Because everyone loves a good list, right?
