Reminder: The SAG Awards are this Weekend

The SAG Awards are right around the corner, hopefully offering HBO a way back after the complete shut-out of the Golden Globes. The SAG’s also tend to be more fun to watch, as the winners are chosen by their fellow actors. HBO has a number of shows nominated for awards this year, and much like the Golden Globes, some double-dipping.

Here is everything that HBO is nominated for:

  • Game of Thrones and Westworld for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones, for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
  • Thandie Newton, Westworld, for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
  • Veep for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep, for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
  • Riz Ahmed, John Turturro, The Night Of, for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or a Limited Series
  • Kerry Washington, Confirmation, for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
  • Game of Thrones, Westworld, for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series

More from Show Snob

Outside of the presence of Westworld and Confirmation, that spread looks very familiar to past years. For one, Peter Dinklage continues to be the only actor from Game of Thrones to be consistently nominated. While he has turned in a fantastic performance year after year, it now feels a bit insulting to the other brilliant actors who keep getting ignored.

Before Game of Thrones and Westworld both lost at The Golden Globes, we would have been comfortable just assuming that one of them would have won. That’s not the case anymore. Those two are up against The Crown and the final season of Downton Abbey, as well as Stranger Things. We’re no longer comfortable assuming anything – it’s anyone’s game.

Next: Watch the first teaser for The Leftovers season 3.

It’s great to see The Night Of up there, but that’s a tough (unfair) choice to have to make. The SAG’s will be broadcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 29th. Even if you don’t like watching award shows, the SAG’s are a different beast. There is no host, so the show doesn’t run as long as there are less shenanigans. Actors also react more personally most of the time when they win.

We’ll be watching and live Tweeting this Sunday. Will you be joining us?
