‘Archer’ Returns Tonight With 1940’s Detective Style Season
Archer is back and this time he’s gone noir and hardboiled with a 1940’s detective tale titled Dreamland.
Archer is back, but we aren’t headed back to New York or the offices of that unfortunately named spy agency. This season Archer and his usual cast of misfits are going hardboiled with a 1940’s detective story. Archer is going to be a private dick again. PHRASING!
Last season Archer and company moved out to L.A. and jumped from the spy business into the detective business. The last we saw of Archer he was face down in a pool, so that should be a clue as to how we might get back to the 40’s.

The idea of Sterling Archer, Lana Kane, Cyril Figgis, Pam Poovey and the rest of the gang running around as over-the-top 1940’s versions of themselves sounds fantastic. Kreiger may pose a small problem though; it’s the late 40’s so instead of being a Nazi clone wouldn’t Kreiger just be a Nazi on the run?
On the other hand it’s another Archer season with a gimmick. Vice was a good time, it tied in nicely to the spy agency theme and really let the crew get totally amoral. The last season of detective work in Los Angeles however left a lot to be desired. The only stand out episodes from last season were “Bel Panto I” and “Bel Panto II.”
The other issue is that if Archer is imagining this season it may not feel like any of the stakes are real. Then again this is a cartoon so maybe the stakes don’t matter and I should just relax and let it go. THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!
Archer Dreamland premieres tonight on FXX at 10PM ET.
