A Rick and Morty fan redditor has come up with a theory that may explain why C-137 is the Rickest Rick of all the Ricks.
WARNING: THIS ARTICLE HAS SPOILERS FOR ‘RICK AND MORTY’ SEASON 3 EPISODE 1. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE NEWEST ‘RICK AND MORTY’ EPISODE YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T READ THIS. ALSO, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE JERRY?
In the first episode of Rick and Morty season 3 we saw Rick totally work the Council of Ricks. Rick uses a brainalizer to swap bodies first with a Federation bug agent, then with a Rick that’s a member of Seal Team Rick, then another Rick, and finally a Rick that’s on the Council of Ricks. Are you confused? Well, pay better attention next time Morty.
Rick eventually assassinates all the Ricks on the Council of Ricks and teleported the whole Citadel of Ricks into the middle of a galactic prison. Why go to all the trouble of taking on the Citadel of Ricks though? The only bad guys that were an immediate threat were the Federation.
Redditor MyFifthALTaccount may have figured it all out. Here’s what they posted to r/fantheories about C-137:
"Here’s my real theory though, what makes Rick the Rick-est Rick is his 4th wall awareness. Rick, unlike the rest of Ricks in the Council of Rick, is the main character of a tv show, and I think Rick is aware of this. He knows he is the main character and that his continued success is based on him having crazier and crazier adventures. One of the reasons why he killed off all the other Ricks in the Council was to ensure that they couldn’t become the main character. He wasn’t just freeing himself and the family, he was eliminating the competition."

Holy crap, that makes total sense. We saw in Season 2 that Rick realizes that he’s on a show and he knows that he needs to keep the show going. Put the rant at the end of the April Fool’s Day episode on and this is looking very solid. Rick didn’t want there to be any other Ricks anymore so that they couldn’t become the series main character. Rick also knows that he has to keep upping to anty to keep all of us watching. This is some deep stuff even for Rick and Morty.
We may have had a long wait for season 3 of Rick and Morty, but it looks like this ride is going to end up being sweeter than McDonald’s schezuan sauce.
What do you think? Do you think Rick is the Rickest Rick because he is the only Rick that realizes he’s in a television show? Let us know in the comments below.
