Animated Rock Gods ‘Gorillaz’ May Be Getting A TV Show

Animated rock gods the Gorillaz may finally be getting the animated series they deserve.

The Gorillaz have been topping the charts since 1998, now they may be headed for a new form of media. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last twenty years the Gorillaz are a band, but they aren’t just any band. The band is the combined work of David Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Albarn provides the music for the band and Hewlett provides the animated band members.

The Gorillaz are a virtual band made up of 2D, Murdoch Niccals, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle. These animated characters and their hijinks create the story behind the muisc. The Gorillaz music videos are known not only for wonderful animation, but wonderful story telling, often about the band themselves.

Now those wonderful animations and great stories may finally be coming to television in a Gorillaz animated series. In an interview with Q Magazine animator Jamie Hewlett revealed that a Gorillaz television series is being worked on. The show would be 10 episodes long and would no doubt be absolutely insane.

In the same interview Hewlett also explained why the rumored Dreamworks Gorillaz movie never came about. The short and long of it is that the story was just too dark for a major animated film. Luckily with the success of animated shows like Rick and Morty and Archer dark themes won’t be a stumbling block for an animated television show.

If you need a Gorillaz fix in the meantime their newest album “Humanz” is set to drop on April 28th.
