Game of Thrones spoiler may reveal Jim Broadbent’s role in season 7
By Corey Smith
Season 7 of Game of Thrones is still months away, but we have a few morsels for you to digest about a certain maester.
Warning: Game of Thrones season 7 spoilers below
Stop us if you’ve heard this one. A maester and a banker walk into an inn. The maester says to the barkeep… OK, we don’t really have a punchline, but we do have some potential spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7, and isn’t that better? Thanks to the loose lips of several actors, both of whom obviously underestimated our detective abilities when it comes to Game of Thrones, we have some pretty serious clues about the upcoming season, and possibly even season 8. Consider us Rust Cohle from True Detective, we’re on the case.
It appears as if we might have confirmed the identity of Jim Broadbent’s character, although this is could be conjecture on the part of The Telegraph. According to The Telegraph, the Oscar award-winning actor will be playing the part of Marwyn, a maester of the Citadel.

Marwyn is a bit off an outcast at the Citadel, as he believes in and studies magic, giving him the nickname Marwyn the Mage. Marwyn is first encountered by Samwell Tarly in A Dance with Dragons upon the later’s arrival at the Citadel.
The Marwyn we see on screen might be different from the book version, as in the books Marwyn immediately departs to seek out Daenerys, who has yet to leave Essos. Marwyn (or whomever Broadbent ends up playing) will appear in five episodes of season 7, which at only 7 episodes represent a large chunk of said season.
In the books Marwyn was actually responsible for teaching Mirri Maz Dur the healing arts; Maz Dur was the maegi who “healed” Khal Drogo (and by “healed” we mean killed). So if some form of Marwyn appears, we guess he teaches Sam the healing arts.
Regardless, this potential spoiler does give us a good look at what’s to come in season 7 and a bit of season 8. Now if we could just get our hands on a script or two. Game of Thrones season 7 debuts July 16th.
