Don’t panic yet though, Claire Foy’s departure from The Crown has been planned all along. The role of Queen Elizabeth is being recast so that an older actress can portray the Queen as she ages. We were curious how Foy was going to continue to play the monarch as she got further into the Queen’s life. Foy is thirty two years old, but she could easily be mistaken for someone younger. If she was to play the aging queen a good bit of makeup would have been required.
Although you should never underestimate the makeup abilities of Hollywood, this is probably the right call to make. This wouldn’t be one episode or a flashback with an aged Foy, but an entire season. The makeup would undoubtedly become distracting over an entire season.
Now the speculation on who will play the older Queen Elizabeth II will begin. This also means that other members of the cast are going to be recast as well, including Prince Phillip who is currently played by former Doctor Who Matt Smith.
So what do you think? Do you think it’s best that Claire Foy is leaving the role, or would you rather see Foy play out the rest of the Queen’s story? Let us know in the comments below.
