‘Iron Chef Gauntlet’ recaptures the old Iron Chef magic

‘Iron Chef Gauntlet’ is a fresh new take on ‘Iron Chef’ that is sure to satisfy even the most discriminating palate.

Iron Chef Gauntlet isn’t Iron Chef or even Iron Chef America, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have all the style and sexiness of its predecessors. Iron Chef America has been missing from the Food Network lineup for a while now, and some might have thought we had seen our final battle, but that’s not the case. The greatest culinary competition on earth is reborn in Iron Chef Gauntlet.

In this new version of Iron Chef the chairman has been replaced by the always deviously delightful Alton Brown. Brown was always the voice of Iron Chef America and now he’s taken his true place at the head of the show. I was concerned that I would miss the chairman, but within a few moments it became obvious that Alton Brown is all Iron Chef America or Iron Chef Gauntlet really needs.

The competition sounds straightforward, but it’s not as simple as it seems. Six great chefs from around America are set to compete with each other. Whichever chef is left standing at the end of the competition will then face not one, but three Iron Chef’s Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, and of course Masaharu Morimoto. If they can defeat all three of these great chefs then they will be crowned as the next Iron Chef.

More from Show Snob

We aren’t sure yet, but it certianly even sounds like beating your opponents isn’t enough, you also have to defeat the Iron Chefs. That makes this competition a far stretch from the typical food game show where you only have to be better than the rest, this time you must be better than the best.

The fist episode of Iron Chef Guantlet aired on Sunday night and was spectacular. The chefs were asked to create a wild game meal and they indeed went wild. This is a competition of the very best, these aren’t regular chefs. The meals these chefs created in thirty minutes were as impressive as anything found in the finest restaurants.

The duck tartar creation of Stephanie Izard than won the praise of Alton Brown. Alton’s least favorite creation was that of Sarah Grunenberg. That didn’t mean that Grunenberg was finished though, it did mean she was going to have to go into a cook off with one of the other competitors to stay in the competition though.

Chef Nyesha Arrington, as seen on Iron Chef Gauntlet, Season 1.

This is where Iron Chef Gauntlet threw another twist. The competitor at the top had to pick who would face Grunenberg in the cook off. Izard chose the next to the bottom competitor Nyesha Arrington. During this first episode all the competitors cheered each other on and were very positive, but with this new twist that may change as the season goes on.

After a battle of lobster judged partly by none other than Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakirian Grunenberg defeated Nyesha and lived to fight another week. The level of cooking though as usual set this new Iron Chef apart from everything else on television.

If you’re looking for a more intense and skillful cooking competition look no further than Iron Chef Gauntlet. We give Iron Chef Gauntlet an A.
