Game of Thrones may be ending after season 8, but HBO has plans to create a spinoff!

HBO has closed deals with four writers to begin work on a Game of Thrones spinoff, once the series ends in 2018 with season 8. As Variety explains, current Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, along with creator George R.R. Martin, will be attached, but will not do any of the writing.

The writers HBO has signed deals with are Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad Men, The Leftovers). Apparently, Jane Goldman, as well as Carly Wray, will be working individually with the author of A Song of Ice and Fire (from which Game of Thrones is based), George R.R. Martin.

HBO will take the time it needs to evaluate the scripts from each writer, according to a spokesperson for the premium network. However, Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, did have some interesting things to say about the possibilities of a Game of Thrones spinoff, during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

"We’ve talked about it. It’s something I’m not opposed to. But, of course, it has to make sense creatively. I am not sure that the guys [Weiss and Benioff] can really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production. It’s a pretty intense production. They’re about to start production soon, but I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there is no concrete plans or anything like that at this point."
