HBO picks up ‘The New Pope’ after the success of ‘The Young Pope’
HBO isn’t letting go of The Young Pope that easily.
According to the A.V. Club, HBO has officially picked up The New Pope after the wildly successful limited series The Young Pope, starring Jude Law and Diane Keaton, aired last January. The new series will be written by Paolo Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello and produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani.
According to an interview with Variety, Sky Italia’s chief of content Andrea Scrosati gave scarce information on what the new show, which will not be a second season of The Young Pope, will have to offer:
"Just like The Young Pope, Sorrentino is writing the script for the new show, but it will have a different twist than what would be expected."
That really isn’t anything to go on, and as of now, it’s unclear whether or not Law will be reprising his role as the titular Lenny, the first American Pope who created chaos as he attempted to bring a wildly conservative and god-fearing atmosphere at the Vatican.

Jude Law did, however, speak with Variety in an exclusive interview about his new movie King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and spoke about his thoughts on playing the role of Lenny for more than one season:
"It wasn’t that I wrapped it up assuming that I was done with it but I went in, we went in, to make a 10-hour film, and we did that. To say that there wasn’t room for more, I’d have been foolhardy."
So, it’s still unclear on whether or not we will be getting more Lenny in the future, but we are still excited to see more from Sorrentino and what other Vatican-antics he has up his sleeve.
