Veep Recap: “Blurb”
Veep has its best episode of the season with “Blurb,” which marks the return of Hugh Laurie as Tom James.
After a lot of minor side plots, Veep season 6, episode 7, “Blurb,” finally manages to craft an episode that raises the emotional stakes for everyone while still making it hilarious. With a well-timed portrait unveiling, the entire Meyer team tries to keep everything together before their big public debut.
Selina finally returns to the White House for her portrait unveiling which becomes the heart of the problem in the episode. With the clock ticking before the big event, she needs to somehow rework her book for her editor. Of course, Selina doesn’t remember much from actually working in the White House but she does think that a chapter on her sex life could do wonders for readers.

Naturally, she settles on adding a part on Tom James, specifically their romantic encounter, which will be scandalous and juicy. While she goes to warn Tom in a “classy,” way, Gary spends a majority of “Blurb” desperate to forget his eye-witness account of that night.

But Tom is no idiot, and he turns on Selina almost immediately by offering Dan a tell-all about the encounter which ostensibly kills her book traction.
Speaking of Dan, he is running into trouble at his job in CBS now that Jane McCabe has left as his co-host. His new partner, Brie, is found unlikable by fans even though she is more than willing to change everything about herself to keep her job.
Unfortunately, viewers also complain that the two have no chemistry which appalls Dan since he is actually sleeping with this anchor, unlike the Jane rumors. Based on the disgusted reactions of the producers after the pair attempt to be flirtatious on-screen, it seems like only a matter of time before Jane returns and Dan has to suffer the consequences of his previous actions.
Dan’s career may be on its way to taking a nosedive, Jonah is continuing to get more confident in “Blurb”. After not getting invited to Selina’s unveiling, he goes all around Washington trying to scrape together an invite. It comes as no surprise that he doesn’t succeed but of course, this slight encourages him to rally his “Jeffersons” together to finally make a big statement.

Their decision to shut down the government is shocking, especially since it’s in reaction to such a ridiculous issue, but it does make Jonah the “bad boy of Washington” which seems to be helping his career. Not only his job in Washington going great, Jonah is also converting to Judaism in a particularly funny scene where he is at a Religion Studies class with Shawnee.
While Jonah is busy making a name for himself in DC, Selina is just trying to keep her name relevant in “Blurb”. After his poorly timed shutdown, Selina ends up losing her fancy unveiling party in favor for a short reception with soda and chips. It does give her an opportunity to confront Tom over his betrayal once again where sparks fly between the two.
Selina accuses him of being in love with her, and truthfully it looks like it might be true for both of them. It seems inevitable for these two to be the endgame pairing of the series unless Veep decides to keep Meyer single. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Hugh Laurie have such amazing chemistry that it would be a shame for the show not to continue exploring this couple.

The unveiling itself goes about as well as anyone would expect with Selina being disgusted by the portrait of her once she sees it. Not to mention that the amazing speech President Montez was supposed to give gets cut short because of Jonah’s shutdown much to Selina’s exasperation.

Next week looks like the Meyer team will be trying to round-up donations for their library which is apparently still a storyline that is happening. Nevertheless, “Blurb” is a fantastic episode of Veep and hopefully, the show continues this upward momentum in the second half of the season. Also, where’s Sue? Please let there be an appearance by everyone’s favorite secretary soon!
