Game of Thrones: Myrcella Baratheon’s Death Was Supposed To Be Very Graphic

When it comes to Game of Thrones, death has become a staple of the show. Normally violent, bloody and sometimes nauseating, a character’s death in Westeros is normally not for the faint of heart.

But then actress Nell Tiger Free, who played Myrcella Baratheon during Game of Thrones season 5, comes along and changes everything.

Her death took place leaving Dorne on a ship with her father/uncle Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) during a touching scene between the two where Myrcella admitted to Jamie that she always had a feeling that he was her father.

More from Show Snob

She doesn’t care if it’s wrong or improper or flat-out gross, in that moment the only thing she does care about is the fact that she has a father (who, thinking back to season 1 when Jamie pushed a child out a window, turned out to be a pretty good person by season 5).

The loving and sweet mood quickly changes though when we see blood start to drip from her nose. Then, we are brought back to the beaches of Dorne with the sand snakes and Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma) and quickly realize what happened.

Ellaria poisons Myrcella with a kiss out of vengeance, and we sure do hate the sand snakes at this point as the innocent teen dies in her father’s arms.

But, it turns out this strangely sweet death could have gone a whole different way according to Tiger Free who recently spoke with MCM Buzz about how her character’s death was supposed to be a whole lot bloodier and involving, yes, mushed bananas. Here is what Tiger Free said about her character’s death in the interview:

"“Originally what happened is they gave me those mashed up bananas with like blood, fake blood. And my brains were supposed to be all over the ship.”“I was so excited. I don’t like gore but, I knew they were just like bananas, so I was okay with it.”"

Much to Tiger Free’s disappointment that Thrones decided to cut out the gory, bloody banana scene (what type of poison would it have been anyway? One that makes your head explode?), we are pretty happy that the showrunners decided to cut down on the blood and guts for this scene because it wouldn’t have had the emotional impact it managed to create with just a drip of blood and Jamie’s horror.

In an excerpt from the actual original Game of Thrones script, here is what the scene was originally supposed to look like:

"Jaime holds his dead daughter in his arms, her hemorrhaged brain-blood covering them both."

Not a pretty sight at all. Here is what Tiger Free said about why the banana brains and hemorrhaging scenes were cut in “Mother’s Mercy”:

"“They cut it out because they wanted Myrcella’s death to reflect her life and wanted it to be sweet, which is rare for Thrones. Unlike my husband [Trystane Martell], who got a spear like straight through his face.”"
