Orphan Black Recap: The Clinical And The Humane

After very little movement on the island, Orphan Black spends a majority of “The Clinical And The Humane.”

With everyone’s favorite genius clone. It also provides some insight into who the mysterious P.T. Westmoreland is past all of the grandeur.  In a particularly science filled episode, Orphan Black continues full speed ahead to a resolution to the series.

Cosima is still hard at work on the island tending to the scientific aspect of the show. She’s been checking in on Aisha while the rest of the village is hunting down the “monster” who escaped. During her research, she flashes back upon the day she realized that all of the clones were patented property.

It was a poignant scene where she finally got to call out Delphine for her secretive nature while also cementing their relationship. The scene is more than just a fondly recalled memory, it serves as a reminder to the audience that despite the desire to trust Delphine, her allegiances have always been murky for the entire run of Orphan Black.

With that memory fresh in her mind, Cosima is reunited with Delphine in “The Clinical And The Humane”. Their relationship has always been tough to endure because, despite their desire to have unwavering loyalty with the other, external forces consistently tear them apart. Cosima wants to take Delphine at her word but is forced to question her motives because of her sisters, while Delphine wants to keep the former safe even if it means aligning herself with the people who wish to hurt her. “The Clinical And The Humane,” is no different for them, when Westmoreland throws a wrench in their relationship by forcing Delphine to betray her in exchange for a trip to Geneva. For Delphine, the ends justify the means because Geneva will allegedly be a turning point for Kira and the rest of the clones.

While the realization that Delphine betrayed her doesn’t come as a massive surprise to Cosima, it does push her to continue her pursuit of the truth. It’s nice to see her back in the science action rather than solely focusing on finding a cure for the clones. Man, does Cosima go out in a blaze of glory in “The Clinical And The Humane”. After being warned by Delphine to back off the “monster” experiments, Cosima begins to put pieces together. Through the span of the show, she has aggressively been in the pursuit of knowledge even when it’s put her own life in danger.

Unsurprisingly, she is the one to discover that P.T. is no everlasting genius but instead just a mad scientist who has been terrorizing the orphan, Yannis, until the boy grew up to be a monster. He’s been attempting to harvest one gene from the boy to create real immortality but has been unable to do so. Now, he has his sights set on Rachel which absolutely disgusts Cosima to her soul.

Finally, we in ” The Clinical And The Humane” get some answers as to why Kira is so special, she does have a gene which accelerates her healing. Rachel’s job is to discover if this said ability can be passed down and if so, their plan is to harvest Kira’s eggs similar to their original plan with Sarah. It is truly awful to think that this man can take away a girl’s ability to have children before she’s even old enough to decide if she wants one for her own.

Not to mention, that Rachel’s part in this is even more disappointing. Not only is she once again being manipulated for power, but she’s choosing to put Kira in danger for a man she barely knows. Once Sarah learns about this, the blonde haired clone is going to be in some real trouble.

Poor Cosima confronts Westmoreland who acts as petulantly as one would expect from the narcissistic scientist. He attempts to force her to shoot Yannis however she rejects his philosophy and instead chooses to keep her humanity. Unfortunately, P.T. doesn’t take the slight well and instead shoots him in the head only to lock Cosima in a cage. Will she be able to get to her sisters before everything goes south? With only five episodes left, things don’t look great for Kira or Helena’s twins. Hopefully, Alison figures out a way to get Cosima before something worse happens to our favorite nerd.
