It’s happening! HBO has green-lit True Detective season 3.

There has yet to be a release date announced, but HBO has decided to move forward with True Detective season 3, with Nic Pizzolatto returning to his writing duties and along with Jeremy Saulnier, will direct.

Pizzolatto released a statement expressing his excitement over working with an Oscar-winning actor in Mahershala Ali, who won the award for Moonlight.

"I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy. I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, season three will tell the story of a “macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Mahershala Ali will portray a State Police officer from Northwest Arkansas, in season 3, named Wayne Hays.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys stated the script for the third season has almost been completed.

"Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective. I’ve read five scripts on the new season and I think they’re terrific."

With Game of Thrones likely not returning to HBO until 2019, the premium cable giant could use a boost from a proven winner like True Detective, to go along with its other flagship show, Westworld.
