The American Horror Story franchise returned last week for its earliest premiere in series history with its latest season, Cult, which explores the rise of a cult of personality in light of arguably the most polarizing presidential election in modern-day history.
Though it didn’t receive as high ratings as last year’s debut revealing the surprise premise for Roanoke, the first episode of season 7 was well-received by critics for its satirical take on voters from both sides of the aisle. We met stereotypical liberal Ally (Sarah Paulson), whose greatest fears are triggered by Donald Trump’s victory, while blue-haired Kai (Evan Peters) decides to run for office and commits deplorable acts after being emboldened by the surprising election results.

Clowns are one of the season’s main motifs thanks to a gang of killer clowns who may or may not be chasing clown-fearing Ally. Episode 1 ended in a cliffhanger with a clown appearing in Ally’s bed. We see the character continue to face the same clowns who scared her in the grocery store, now in her home, in the preview for the second episode, insinuating that she may be experiencing more hallucinations. Her paranoia continues to set in, and she may even may experiencing agorahobia, according to her therapist, Dr. Rudy (Cheyenne Jackson).
She’s understandably on edge in light of her neighbors being murdered. Though Ally’s son Oz (Cooper Dodson) claims to have seen the clowns murdering the couple, Det. Samuels (Colton Haynes) tells Ally and her wife Ivy (Alison Pill) that their death looks to be a result of a murder suicide. One of the victims was a city council member who publicly humiliated Kai earlier in the episode.
Ally’s torments continue when she comes face-to-face with Kai for a second time in episode 2. The first time, he purposely threw a drink at the lesbian couple and sneered, “Enjoy your latte, bitch.” The latest interaction comes while Kai is campaigning for the now-vacant city council seat. He becomes aggressive after Ally refuses to let him in for a glass of water. We also see Winter (Billie Lourd), Kai’s sister and Oz’s new nanny, continue to scare the young boy under her care.
