Outlander season 3 continues to get better with each episode as “Of Lost Things” reveals a very intriguing surprise.

Outlander episode 304, “Of Lost Things,” starts out with Claire and Brianna back in Scotland, with Roger, searching in earnest for Jamie. The trio of historical detectives has created a literal timeline on a whiteboard, in order to track Jamie’s movements through the 1700’s. And, thanks to detailed prisoner reports, they learn Jamie did in fact, live through the Battle of Culloden.

However, once the prison shut down and the prisoners were shipped off to the colonies, they lose Jamie’s track. That’s where we find him, as Lord Grey has used his influence to find Jamie a home as a groomsman at Helwater, serving Lord Dunsany and his family.

Lord Dunsany knows that Jamie was a leader in the Jacobite army, but trusts Lord Grey’s word. Only, he informs Jamie that because his own son died in the war, his identity must never be revealed to the rest of his family.

Meanwhile, Brianna and Roger go on a road trip and begin heavily flirting with each other, because we saw that coming a mile away.

Back in the 1700’s, Jamie learns of the difficult nature of the eldest Dunsany daughter — Geneva. The rest of the groomsmen draw straws so they won’t have to escort her on her daily rides, and soon, it is revealed why.

Geneva has been betrothed to the Earl of Ellesmere, a man who is old enough to be her grandfather, and she isn’t pleased. On one of her many rides, Geneva finally singles out Jamie and insists that he escorts her. Later, she corners him and tells him she knows exactly who he is and that she would reveal his identity to her mother (meaning he would be taken to prison) unless he came to her bedchambers that night and took her virginity before she marries the elder Lord of Ellesmere.

Jamie, after repeated attempts to resist, finally realizes he has no choice and agrees to her demands. After a bit of talking, Geneva reveals she has no idea how to have sex and wants to learn from a man like Jamie. The two have sex, and Jamie becomes Geneva’s instructor, much like Claire was for him in season 1 after they were married.

Back in Claire and Brianna’s timeline, the trail is still cold, and Claire has decided it is time to return to Boston.

When next we see Jamie, he is being alerted by Geneva’s sister that she is having a difficult pregnancy and that he must ready the horses and attend the family as they quickly travel to Ellesmere to be with her.

Once there, it is revealed that Geneva had a baby boy — a baby that is Jamie’s — and Lord Ellesmere knows it isn’t his. Geneva soon dies from complications during the birth, and her sister angrily tells Jamie she knows he is the father. Lord Ellesmere, in a fit of rage, calls the baby a bastard and threatens to kill him. Jamie intervenes and kills the Lord before he can drive a dagger into the infant.

When the family returns home, Geneva’s sister confronts Jamie and apologizes for her anger. They’ve named the child William (Willie) and are happy he is part of the family. Lady Dunsany confronts Jamie and tells him she knows he was a Jacobite but after his rescue of her grandson, she has decided to forgive him for that and will release him.

She says her husband need only say a word and Jamie would be released from his parole and could return home a free man. Jamie considers this, but looking at his son, decides to stay on. Jamie stays with the family until he realizes Willie is starting to look too much like him, and so, he asks Lord Grey (who is marrying Geneva’s sister) to look after the boy as a father.

Jamie, who has grown quite close to Willie, tells the boy he has to leave and then gives him a wooden carved snake — like the one his brother gave him. Jamie then leaves to return to Scotland as Lord Grey and Willie watch him ride away.
