Inhumans Recap: “Those Who Would Destroy Us”
“Those Who Would Destroy Us,” is a mild improvement over the premiere but does little to instill any faith in audiences that Inhumans is going to improve.
In genre shows, pilots tend to be overstuffed because the series is attempting to introduce an entire universe while setting up the plot. However, Inhumans still fails to rise above generic and “Those Who Would Destroy Us,” acts more of a reminder of how disappointing the show is for longtime comics fans.
Two seasons ago Iwan Rheon was playing one of the most notorious television villains on Game of Thrones and now he’s stuck spewing vague monologues about “having no choice”. He has successfully stolen the throne from his brother but only managed to capture Lockjaw and Crystal with the rest of the royal family escaping.
For now, the three of them have little to do, with the new king lounging about and looking pained while the young princess hangs out in her apartment. Lockjaw has been disposed of through sleep-induced magic which was probably due to budget cuts. “Those Who Would Destroy Us,” does introduce another threat in the form of Maximus’ right-hand woman, Auran, who is sent to Earth to assassinate the remaining members of the royal family.
She’s able to track down Medusa relatively easily after the queen has a chat with her sister via their wristbands. It’s infuriating to see such a strong character reduced to a dimwit, which happens consistently throughout “Those Who Would Destroy Us”. Why would Medusa continue chatting with Crystal once she realizes it could give Maximus her location?
On top of that, she uses her bracelet to call Black Bolt despite knowing that he can’t speak rather than Karnak or Gorgon. In fact, why don’t any of them call each other on Earth? Clearly, Inhumans assumes that the audience won’t care enough to ask the questions or maybe they simply don’t care. Either way, it leads to Medusa getting into an altercation with Auran with the latter ending up in a dumpster after getting stabbed.
Black Bolt also runs into some trouble in “Those Who Would Destroy Us,” because he stole a suit from a local store. He attempts to keep silent throughout the entire fight with the police, but eventually a small grunt escapes which sends a police car flying. Again, why would so many police officers come speeding down the street to catch a shoplifter seems like some serious overkill but maybe things are done differently in Hawaii.

Despite the property damage, Black Bolt manages to win over the officers after showing that he can easily break out of his cuffs to escape but is choosing to cooperate with them. Maybe he knows that SHIELD could come in and save him at any moment considering how much time the organization has spent securing Inhumans.
In the meantime, the former scientist Louise is on her way to Hawaii to have a discussion with the silent king.
Elsewhere, both Karnak and Gorgon make almost no progress in reuniting with anyone. The former seems to be figuring out how to climb down a mountain but keeps ending up in the same spot. Gorgon, on the other hand, uses his wristband to have a chat with Maximus where he demands a fight.
It seems unclear but “Those Who Would Destroy Us,” makes it look like the warrior is just going to camp out on the beach alongside his new surfer buddies until everyone comes to him. Maximus doesn’t seem to care all that much about either of them because he finally announces to Attilan that he is their new king and Auran is seen healing her wounds by the end of the episode.
