We’re going to learn more about Negan in The Walking Dead season 8
Get ready to learn more about the bat-wielding big bad — Negan himself — in The Walking Dead season 8.
When The Walking Dead returns for its eighth season on October 22, Rick will be leading the combined armies of Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom against Negan and his Saviors in a story-arc right from the comics — All Out War.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the man who portrays Negan, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what his character is up to in season 8, and how we might see a backstory for the villain.
"We’re going to start seeing slivers of who this guy is beyond the brutality that we saw in season 7. The most fascinating stuff that I’ve got to do this year is seeing behind the leather jacket."
In the comics and books, Negan is a deeply complex individual, not just some brutal bat-wielding maniac. While yes, he does have that violent and extremely brutal side, he also has another side that is completely different from the other. Yet still, Morgan assures us, “He’s still going to be a big f—ing dick.”
The actor also thinks Negan doesn’t see himself as a bully, and that viewers are going to start to see “slivers of who this guy is beyond the brutality that we saw in season 7.”

"We’re going to find some more things about Negan, which I think are fascinating. I think the audience is going to really kind of dig it too."
Morgan notes that showrunner Scott M. Gimple has a plan for Negan this season and that it’s “fascinating stuff,” and while he’s hopeful for a full backstory on Negan, we won’t be seeing that in season 8.
"So he’s going to reveal some of himself to the audience this year, which is going to be awesome. It’s going to be fascinating."
Speaking to how season 7 will differ from season 8, Morgan says last season “a lot of emotional turmoil,” but season 8 is going to depart from that.
"This year it’s going to be more kind of visceral action, which I think the audience deserves after last year."
