Supergirl Season Three Premiere Recap: “Girl of Steel”

The season three premiere of Supergirl is easily one of the show’s best despite Kara Danvers losing her usual happy self.

“Girl of Steel,” picks up after the events of last season’s finale, everyone is adapting to life after the invasion. Maggie and Alex are engaged, Winn is thriving at the DEO, but they’re still walking on emotional eggshells due to Kara’s unhappiness. Supergirl has completely withdrawn into her dreams of the loved ones she lost and everyone begins to fear that she’ll never return to herself.

Still grieving from the loss of Mon-El, Kara has decided to abandon her human persona in favor of focusing on Supergirl. “Girl of Steel,” is saved by Melissa Benoist’s fantastic acting and the genuine nature of her defeat. As she explains to Alex, why would she rather be a sad broken girl when she can be a triumphant hero? Attempting to squash down her feelings, she ends up pushing her sister away and quitting her job all while avoiding a very guilt-ridden Lena. It definitely feels more realistic to still have her be upset in the premiere rather than chipper considering the decision she made last season was a heart-wrenching one no matter how one feels about Mon-El’s character.

Lena is dealing with her own set of problems and seems desperate to try to help her best friend. Rival businessman, Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar), has made it his intention to build condos for the elite in a downtrodden area of National City no matter what the cost. In his cross-fire is Lena and CatCo Media because they’re the only two vocal members of the opposition who can stop him.

Fortunately, with Cat Grant as the new Press Secretary, it gives Edge the opportunity to buy up CatCo and change the narrative of his story. After being asked by Kara to try to stop Edge’s acquisition of the media corporation, Lena ends up buying the company instead, as a way to win her best friend back. Luckily, by the end of “Girl of Steel,” it looks like the two are well on their way to repairing their relationship with Kara finally making concrete plans to see her.

However, the main arc in “Girl of Steel,” is the new villain Bloodsport setting his sights on National City. After stealing daxamite technology from a military base, he shoots a couple of missiles at the ceremony where Supergirl’s statue is getting unveiled. Unluckily, everyone happens to be at the waterfront for the event, including the season big bad, Samantha (Odette Annable). She will eventually become the Worldkiller, Reign, but for now, she’s just the single mom to a rambunctious preteen played by Emma Tremblay.

The destruction at the waterfront is incredibly well-done, with Kara diving into the water to take down the submarine only to be knocked out by the blast of one of the missiles. As her friends’ look on with devastated looks as they consider the worst, but Mon-El yelling for her to wake up finally stirs Supergirl up to save the day. It’s great emotional payoff after seeing how much she’s struggled and for a second, there was a moment when it seemed like Kara might be content to die.

While it seems like Kara is back on her way to her old self by the closing of “Girl of Steel,” the ending isn’t happy for everyone. Samantha is woken up by a terrifying dream by one of the other Worldkillers while Kara takes a shot with her friends at the bar. Things might be getting easier for the hero, but this single mom is about to go through the ringer.
