‘Mr. Robot’ Season 3 premiere recap
By Shawn Lealos
One of TV’s most twisted shows is back as Mr. Robot started its third season on Wednesday night and the show isn’t finished throwing curveballs yet.
To recap, last season ended with Tyrell shooting Elliott as he tries to stop the “Stage 2” plan, Angela almost dies at the hands of the Dark Army before striking a new deal with Whiterose, and Darlene realizes that no one involved with fsociety is safe – including herself. With that said, here is a look at how Mr. Robot season three starts.

Elliott Lives
The third season starts with the entire city suffering from a blackout.
Elliott lies on the floor, bleeding from the gut shot, and Tyrell freaking out. We then meet a brand-new character who looks like he will be a massive player in season three. Irving (Bobby Cannavale) appears to be a mixture of a middle management man for The Dark Army as well as their fixer. Here, Irving comes in, makes sure that a doctor arrives to save Elliott’s life and then ducks back out.
Elliott wakes up later in the apartment of Angela, who seems concerned about him. Elliott lets her know that they are in danger and explains that “Stage 2” was a plan to blow up the entire Evil Corp building. This building is where the corporation houses the physical copies of their financial information since fsociety already destroyed the online information. He then says that he needs to stop Stage 2 because thousands of people could die if they follow through on the plan.
That is when Elliott realizes that Mr. Robot is gone and he wonders if the bullet killed his alter ego.

Elliott Enlists Darlene’s Help
Elliott heads home and realizes that someone is watching his apartment. His landlord explains that someone is in his apartment and when Elliott opens the door, he finds Darlene. His sister tells him that the Dark Army betrayed them and murdered Cisco. She also informs him that the FBI took her in and asked her questions. Much to her chagrin, Elliott seems more concerned about the FBI than about the death of Cisco.
Despite the two still clashing, Darlene agrees to take Elliott to an unground hacker layer where they still have power and Internet. Elliott heads there to shut the back door in the system to keep the Dark Army from blowing up the building. He succeeds, but just as he does so, two members of the Dark Army grab Darlene and force both of them out and onto the street. They tell the two to head into the alley.
A cab pulls up, and Irving is driving. He explains that the vehicle that has been following Elliott is the FBI and tells them to get in. Irving leads the FBI on a chase but proves very capable at his job. Using the computer in the backseat, he has Darlene type in the tag number of the FBI vehicle and cross-references it to get the VIN. Irving then calls Onstar, gives them a police ID number and asks them to put a forced stop on the vehicle by explaining it was stolen and was driving recklessly through residential neighborhoods.
That allows the three to escape and they head to a restaurant where Irving questions Elliott. When Elliott tells Irving that he closed the back door, Irving is flabbergasted. Elliott then calls off the entire deal, and Irving agrees and heads out – but not before telling Elliott that the bullet they took out of him can easily be put back in him.

Elliott Talks To Us
As the show has done since the start, Elliott is the narrator (although a very unreliable one), and he starts to talk about what he caused to happen with this plan to bring down Evil Corp. Much like the first two seasons showed President Obama on TV, this episode showed that the Dark Army likely had a lot to do with President Trump winning the last election and superimposed shots of Trump with shots of the police beating civilians and race riots.
Elliott explained that he wanted to start a revolution but did the opposite. Instead, he made it to where the public was more submissive to the massive corporations in the world, and they became more controlling and pushed people further down. When showing scenes of the building of the border wall to Mexico, Elliott said that Americans were enclosing themselves in their own prisons. Then Elliott said this was not because of Evil Corp, politicians, or the Dark Army.
Elliott said that he was the one to blame for everything.

Before we get into the big twist at the end of Mr. Robot’s third season premiere, there was a scene earlier with Whiterose. Her right-hand man asks for permission to eliminate Elliott and take control of the operation himself. Whiterose explains that Elliott’s dad worked for her, without knowing it, and his work led them to this point. Now, Elliott is working for her and is more determined than anyone due to his rage. It is that rage that they need – and then Elliott can die when he has finished his job.
After Elliott believes that he has canceled Stage 2, he heads back to Angela’s apartment. Elliott tells her what he did and then says that he needs her to get him a job at Evil Corp so he can be on the inside to ensure nothing else happens. He then tries to kiss her, but she resists, and Elliott realizes that she has not changed and can’t love someone who loves her back.
Elliott then tells her that she knows him better than anyone and he needs her to let him know if “he” shows back up, meaning Mr. Robot. She agrees and then asks him a strange question. Angela asks Elliott whether he would be willing to do something that could make none of the terrible things that happened to them ever happen if he could. She said if they could even erase their parent’s deaths, would he do it. Elliott says it is impossible and she heads to bed while he goes to sleep on the couch.
Later that night, Angela walks back into the living room and sees Mr. Robot standing and looking out the window. He looks at her, and she tells him it is time to go. They head to Irving’s and explain to him that Elliott has changed his mind about the plans. They then head into another room where Tyrell is waiting. Mr. Robot then starts working on their plan for Stage 2 again, as Irving and Tyrell seem confused.
The twist is that Angela is now in all the way in, working with the Dark Army.
The season premiere ends with Mr. Robot and Angela on the subway heading back home. Mr. Robot looks at Angela and asks how she can lie to Elliott. Angela says she won’t talk to him like she does Elliott because she doesn’t like Mr. Robot. He tells her that he doesn’t trust her and wants to know how she can lie to Elliott. She said that she isn’t because she is talking to Elliott right now.
Mr. Robot understands this because this is also how he manipulates Elliott. He then asks why she is doing this and she said that she has always wanted justice against Evil Corp for the death of her mother and it never came. Now, she has a chance to make it all disappear, and with it, a whole new world can be born. With that, the power comes back on in the city.
