The Gifted Recap: “boXed in”

“boXed in,” tries to develop the Sentinel Service agent, Jace Turner, this week but fails to make him a sympathetic character.

After a string of great episodes, the momentum is slightly stalled due to the focus on Coby Bell’s stoic government agent. Thankfully, the Struckers pick up the slack by showcasing their respective abilities and what they could bring to the mutant underground.

It’s not that this is a bad episode of The Gifted, but that Jace has been the weakest link of the ensemble since the first episode. It’s hard to care for his deceased daughter’s death because she’s on-screen for only a minute before dying. This is the catalyst for him to start hunting down mutants but it seems, like the rest of the humans in this world, that he already carries a disdain for powered people before the July 15th incident.

Sure, the guy lost his daughter, but before “boXed in,” The Gifted has made it clear that hundreds of mutants lose their friends and family just because they carry the X-gene. When Lorna and Marcos kidnap Jace after destroying his road block, it’s nice to see neither mutant waver in their desire to get answers despite his heartbreaking story.

The two lovebirds get the chance to reunite and come up with baby names (Aurora and Rory) before they run into Sentinel Services in “boXed in”. Viewers get their first taste of an emotional charged Polaris, who seems to be on the edge of pulling the trigger throughout the episode. After kidnapping Agent Turner, they attempt to get answers about how the government managed to flip Pulse but it’s doesn’t work.

With no options left and surrounded by Sentinel Services, Dreamer and Blink show up in the nick of time. The former uses her powers to view his memories but when a couple of tear gas grenades force the mutants to flee, she isn’t able to get everything she needs. Turner is left without the memories of the last four years while Dreamer is able to confirm that the Hounds will be appearing on The Gifted.

While all of this is happening, Caitlin and Reed are trying to remain in the good graces of the other mutants in “boXed in”. Turns out the mutant who Reed almost screwed over a few weeks ago is back and ready for vengeance. After helping the underground distinguish what the police codes mean on the radio, Reed uses himself as bait to redirect the cops. This ends up working as well as solidifying his allegiance to some of the doubters.

In the meantime, Caitlin and the kids get to be medical heroes when they save the mutant who was shot last week. Andy donates some blood and Lauren stops him from hemorrhaging which gives Caitlin enough time to remove the bullet as well as stitch him back up again. Their family dinner that night is full of laughs and poor food but it looks like the Struckers will be sticking around.

Blink discovered that Dreamer messed with her head earlier in the season and demanded she steer clear. This is sure to add some more drama to their already weird love triangle with John but in the meantime they’ll have to deal with the Hounds. If Rachel Summers does get to  make a cameo in The Gifted, than these mutants might be in a lot of trouble.
