Gotham Recap: “A Day In The Narrows”
While the title of the episode is “A Day In The Narrows,” the two colliding groups in Gotham don’t reunite.
It seems like Lee and Gordon could be heading toward a reunion this week, she is, unfortunately, missing. Nevertheless, Pyg has become one of the best villains on Gotham and every week he survives is a promising sign for the show. His flair for the dramatics is typical for the campy attitude of the show yet Michael Cerveris brings something unique to the table with his personality.
The Pyg is still on the loose in “A Day In The Narrows,” and targeting the dirty cops. Harvey isn’t that amenable to Jim’s request last week to stop taking money from Penguin and the two friends are at odds through the entire episode. The captain gets Penguin’s gang, including new bodyguard, Headhunter, to help with the search for their cop killer. It comes as no surprise that Pyg would extend his threats from just a couple of cops to all of them considering everyone except for Jim is working for Penguin.
However, when they manage to save one dirty officer, Jim sits in the ambulance to get as much information as he can. It’s lucky that he’s the one too because Penguin’s gang beats up members of an apartment building in the Narrows to threaten anyone for information. The office manages to tell Jim the location of the Pyg, as well as cementing his newfound loyalty after realizing his decision to work for Penguin was the wrong one.
At the abandoned court house where the Pyg is allegedly hiding, Penguin and his dirty workers manage to break in. This is in direct opposition against Sofia’s advice of distancing himself from the GCPD. “A Day In The Narrows,” shows the first seeds of dissent in Gotham when Penguin gloats to the news about his recent success.
When the court-house raid turns out to be a trap, just as Jim had warned, the gang members refuse to go inside to save his other men. Jim charges in to help out the remaining cops and the group manages to save the injured office from inside. Now, the news has dubbed Jim a hero and his fellow cops now respect him enough to toss Penguin’s licenses out the window.
Unfortunately, his success seems to have cost him his relationship with Harvey. His partner is upset that Jim has turned out to be the hero of the day even though he’s been working hard to get the crime wave stopped.
“A Day In The Narrows,” continues the growth of Bruce Wayne into his infamous persona. While his Batman ambitions have been clear since the beginning of the season, but now he’s forming his millionaire playboy mask.

When a girl from his old school invites him out to party, they go meet up with a couple of other people including Tommy Elliott. His former school yard nemesis has done quite a bit of soul-searching and is now more tolerant. When they get to the club, the bouncer turns down one of the rude boys so Bruce ends up buying the place to party. He gleefully bars the mean kid, and goes to toss back drinks in the VIP section. With a new love interest and a lot of free alcohol, Bruce is heading down a path of typical teenage rebellion.
It doesn’t get a lot of focus in “A Day In The Narrows,” but the Gotham City Sirens finally form this week. After Barbara announces that she wants to disband the business, Selina is desperate to keep her semi-family together.
She takes on a job by herself but ends up needing to be bailed out by Tabitha. The woman asks Barbara for some help but this new “enlightened” version of the once good friend to both girls has no interest. This leaves Tabs to go after Selina on her own and the two end up getting into a bit of a rough spot. Luckily, Babs has a change of heart and ends up shooting five guys to save her friends to officially form the Sirens.

It looks like next week’s episode of Gotham is going to be one of the best yet. While Pyg has escaped into the night as he thinks up a new plan, a lot of reunions will be happening for the next episode. A Barbara/Lee showdown and Tabitha seeing what happened to Butch, the show could be taking a break from Jim’s search justice.
