The Gifted Recap: “threat of eXtinction”
The Gifted takes a detour this week with “threat of eXtinction,” following Reed and John visiting the former’s estranged father.
With the clock ticking and the government closing in, the Mutant Underground is forced to figure out how to combat the hounds. However, Reed and Caitlin begin to question their place in the war between humans and mutants.
After realizing that Trask Industries is pulling the strings with Sentinel Services, Reed tells John it’s imperative that they track down his father, who happens to be a former employee of the company. Without any better ideas, John tells him to prepare a car while he accompanies Marcos and Clarice on a refugee retrieval when another safe house gets raided.
Everything seems to be going to plan until Esme Cuckoo (Skyler Samuels), alerts Clarice of a mutant in their midst with unusual thoughts and reveals a hound hiding with the refugees. “threat of eXtinction,” heightens the pressure by Sentinel Services, which makes Reed more desperate when he confronts his father. Old Man Strucker lets his son know that his research with Trask focused on suppressing the X-Gene after being raised by his villainous family the (incestuous?) Von Strucker twins.
“Threat of eXtinction,” begins to develop the storyline that one or both of the Strucker kids could become evil. Reed’s father admits to curing his son of his mutant side as a child and hoped that it would stop the gene from ever being passed down. But with his grandchildren exhibiting the same powers as his relatives, Papa Strucker is left feeling hopeless.
He sacrifices himself to save his son but leaves an ominous warning to “protect the world from Andy and Lauren.” Reed is left shaken by the death of his dad and the news that his children have the combined power to create a lot of destruction. In the meantime, his father’s sacrifice also injures Dr. Campbell and kills Pulse, who manages to regain his consciousness just in time to apologize to John.

While those two are away, Caitlin is trying to figure out a way to treat the hound in their care. Marcos realizes that the woman is suffering from withdrawal from a drug after recognizing certain symptoms from mutants high on kick, a comic book drug. While Lorna is more than happy to threaten the girl with knives, Caitlin manages to knock her out just long enough to help with some of the pain.
However, she’s unable to speak despite wanting to tell the group what she knows. Luckily, the heroic nurse remembers that Esme is a telepath just in time for the Stepford Cuckoo to discern the location of Trask Industries and where the other mutants are being held. She also lets it slip that Sentinel Services has taken her entire family, which means that the rest of the Cuckoos are probably being held there as well.
For those watching “threat of eXtinction,” and were unaware of her comic book origins, Esme is one of five clones of the “White Queen,” or Emma Frost. Of the group, Esme is the one who not only abandons her sisters but also turns on them once she gets high on kick. Could she be a villain in disguise?

Next week it looks like the group is finally going to go on the offensive against Sentinel Services when they ambush the facility. Lauren and Andy, who hold hands at the end of “threat of extinction,” seem to be harnessing their Fenris power to save the day. It should be interesting to see how the two characters develop considering Andy has shown a desire to proudly display his power while Lauren has preferred to maintain some normalcy.
