The Runaways Recap: “Destiny”

Marvel’s Runaways keeps getting better with each episode.

It can’t be said enough that The Runaways showrunners made the best creative decision, by keeping the kids from running away immediately to explore their reactions first. Every scene is tainted by the lies that the parents could be telling their kids, which makes for a compelling amount of tension in all of the relationships.

“Destiny,” takes the first step in the kids discovering the more villainous side of their parents after the past two episodes dealt with the immediate fallout of the PRIDE meeting.

The group meets up at the beach to discuss exactly what they saw and what their parents could be up to. Immediately the sort-of-friends break up into groups who believe that Destiny was murdered and those who are trying to find an alternative possibility. Nevertheless, they all pair up with the mission to figure out as much as they can to try to prove their own theories.

Molly is the only one not being taken seriously (mainly because of her age) when she claims that there was a monster in the basement. Sadly, she gets carted off to her own storyline while everyone else carries on with the investigation.

Chase and Gert get to sniff around his father’s lab with the intention of finding the metal box that Destiny was shoved into. However, things take the turn for a little more fun in “Destiny,” with Gert donning a pair of x-ray goggles to check out Chase naked. While he scoffs at the double standard, the goggles do prove to be useful when she finds the box hidden but empty.

Unfortunately, he can’t figure out a way to open it and the two head off to the Yorke’s to investigate the basement. It doesn’t seem like Gert really believes they’ll find anything, but her desire to keep spending time with Chase is clear and he happily goes along so that he can play the hero. Shockingly, they run into a dinosaur, or “Old Lace,” who already responds to Gert like an obedient dog. Before she can explore the connection further, the poor dinosaur runs off and leaves the two teens speechless.

Molly spends most of “Destiny,” trying to outsmart Catherine Wilder. When Geoffrey finds one of her hair clips in his office, his wife makes it her mission to figure out if she saw anything. Cornering her at a coffee house, she begins to question an uncomfortable Molly. The young girl flees to the bathroom, where she busts out a window only to fall asleep outside by the dumpster.

Sadly, Catherine finds her and manages to trap her inside the car so that she can continue the interrogation. Molly showcases a propensity for lying when she manages to convince the established lawyer that she snuck into the office looking for liquor before having a tantrum about being adopted. Thankfully, the youngest member of the team seems to have gotten the PRIDE off her tail for the time being.

More from Show Snob

Nico is beginning to dance with fire the closer she gets to finding out the truth. “Destiny,” sees her parents finally go on a date which gives her the time to snoop through her mother’s belongings. After finding her sister’s diary and retrieving her mother’s staff, she calls Alex over to help her clean up.

Yet, her mother returns early because her father opted to meet up with his mistress, Chase’s mother, rather than finish out their night. Nico also thinks quickly on her feet, where she makes it seem as though Alex is over for a makeout session to divert any unwanted attention.

She gets more information than Karolina, who is in hopeless denial of her parents’ involvement. However, it won’t be for very long because “Destiny,” leaves off with the discovery that the girl from her church has turned up dead rather than living it up in London like the text she received said.

“Destiny,” continues the hot streak for The Runaways with another fantastic episode. Each character is so unique and the show is happily showcasing how their distinct personalities affect their relationships with one another. Despite the loving relationship the Wilder’s, Yorke’s, and Dean’s have with their kids, it’s clear that there’s a menacing undertone in all of their scenes. How this plays out in the long-term will be the most interesting developments in the series.
