Tom Clancy’s character of Jack Ryan remains one of the most successful military-political characters in literature.

Jack Ryan appeared in nine of his own novels, starting with The Hunt for Red October (1984) and concluding with Red Rabbit (2002). There was also a Jack Ryan Jr. series that has continued since the death of Clancy in 2013.

He also crossed over successfully into films.

Alec Baldwin starred as Ryan in 1990’s The Hunt for Red October while Harrison Ford got two chances with 1992’s Patriot Games and 1994’s Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck took over in the 2002 film The Sum of All Fears and most recently Chris Pine got the chance in 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Now, Jack Ryan is coming to the small screen.

Amazon’s Jack Ryan series

Amazon is pumping up their slate of original series, which includes the upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series, and they also have secured the rights to Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character. The series will arrive in 2018 and will star John Krasinski.

Krasinski remains most successful in comedies, such as his role on The Office, but he wants to be an action star. After failing to win the role of Captain America for Marvel – it looks like he is getting another chance as Jack Ryan on Amazon.

Amazon released a brand-new teaser trailer this week, and you can check it out below.

More from Show Snob

One thing that recent movies lost out on was that Jack Ryan is NOT a major action hero. Honestly, in his books, Ryan does what he can to survive, but he is an analyst (who eventually becomes President of the United States). It is his associate Jack Clark who is the action hero.

This trailer doesn’t show much, but it looks like it takes place in the Middle East and Jack Ryan is only shown interrogating a prisoner – and admitting he is just an analyst. However, the synopsis sounds like they are trying to get Jack Ryan fighting terrorists once again.

"When CIA analyst Jack Ryan stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies."
