‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ coming to Netflix instead of the CW

Word broke this summer that the success of The CW series Riverdale would result in more Archie-based TV shows, including a spin-off featuring Sabrina: The Teenage Witch.

However, the original rumors indicated that Sabrina: The Teenage Witch would show up on Riverdale and The CW would get the spin-off series. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that plans have changed.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Instead of showing up on Riverdale, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch will instead get her show on Netflix. The streaming service has ordered a two-season run of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. That is also the name of a graphic novel from Archie Comics about the character.

The comic book was based on the teenage years of Sabrina Spellman during the ’60s. Instead of being based on the old ABC series that flipped to the WB back in the late ’90s, this one is based on the comic that resided in the “chilling” world of Afterlife with Archie.

For those who are unfamiliar with the comics, Afterlife with Archie is a horror imprint from Archie Comics, and that specific storyline was about Archie and the gang during a zombie apocalypse. That series saw Hot Dog die, so Jughead asks Sabrina to bring his dog back from the dead. She does, but the dog is a zombie, bites Jughead turning him into a zombie, and the apocalypse begins.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a companion series but is not set in the world of the zombie stories. Instead, in this series, Sabrina lives with her aunts in the ’60s and has to decide if she wants to remain a witch or become mortal. However, her Madam Satan shows up from Hell and wants revenge on Sabrina’s family.

Sabrina on Netflix

With the news that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is coming to Netflix with a two-season order, it sounds like the tie-in with Riverdale won’t happen (even though CW shows like Riverdale arrive on Netflix immediately when their season ends).

There will be 10 episodes in each season, for a total of 20 to start off. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the Archie Comics CCO and Riverdale showrunner, will work as the executive producer and writer for the new Sabrina: The Teenage Witch series.
