The Gifted Recap: “outfoX”
The Gifted has gotten dangerously close to losing its stakes throughout this season with the Mutant Underground consistently ending up on top. However, “outfoX,” takes the typical formula the series has been following and blowing it up with a surprising and bold ending.
With the clock winding down on this season, it will be interesting to see which mutants end up on which side. After last week’s meeting with his father, Reed returns home with an info dump for his family. Naturally, “outfoX,” finally sees the kids test out their Fenris power by holding hands despite their father’s apprehension.
This episode gives the Strucker children a little more personality now that both of them can showcase their confusing mix of emotions about their potential destructive nature rather than have the two stand on opposing sides when it comes to their powers. However, the handholding does give the hour a bit of a weird incestuous undertone and considering the von Strucker twins gave off the same vibe, hopefully, the show learns how to work around that.
Throughout “outfoX,” Esme has taken on a larger role at the Mutant Underground and not in a good way. While it’s exciting to have a member of the Cuckoos on the show, it’s worth noting that Esme becomes a villain in the comics. It seems like The Gifted is playing off her book reputation on the show by making her allegiances murky.
She spends a majority of the episode playing mind tricks on Polaris and John in order to convince the rest of the group to launch an assault on Sentinel Services. While it doesn’t seem like she’s working with Dr. Campbell, it seems clear that she would willingly switch sides if it means her sisters/clones safety would be guaranteed.

With all of the mutants convinced to attack Campbell’s lab, they convince the Strucker kids to help blow the power station to help kill the security. Reed and Caitlin watch them from a van which allows them to alert their kids of any oncoming threats. Sonia and Blink lead them throughout the building, but unluckily for them, Agent Turner suspected that they would mount an assault on the building. Sending his Sentinels there, they quickly capture Blink when she’s unable to open a portal quickly enough.
Sonia is devastated to leave her new friend but knows that it’s imperative to get the two kids to safety. Dreamer ends up also letting herself get caught in order to buy Lauren and Andy a few more minutes of time. However, the two decide not to level a building using their Fenris powers when Andy points out it will kill everyone inside. It’s a shocking end to “outfoX,” with the kids getting the mutant collars strapped to them while Caitlin screams for her children.
What will happen next week? “outfoX,” definitely raised the stakes tenfold now that Sentinel Services has gotten ahold of four of their strongest members who also know the location of their base. Based on the promo for next week, it looks like Dreamer might be killed in order to scare the kids into cooperation.

Will Campbell be able to turn them to work for his hound program? It definitely seems like the Underground is in serious problem when the show returns next week.
