Marvel’s Runaways Recap: “Fifteen”

The Runaways finally gets the kids all on the same page in “Fifteen,” with the gang getting proof to prove their parents’ innocence or guilt.

It allows the show to pair up some characters that wouldn’t usually interact, as well as begin to reestablish the friendship everyone once shared. With the series gaining momentum as it heads towards the inevitable conclusion of the kids running away, it’s been interesting to see how PRIDE’s mistakes have affected their children.

Karolina and Gert are the only two remaining members of the groups who are holding onto any hope that this whole situation is one big understanding. The two team up together to research some of the higher level Gibborim ceremonies, thinking that maybe it was just a weird religious practice that everyone witnessed. While their time together is short, it’s nice to see the two characters bonding in “Fifteen,” despite the obvious love triangle forming between them in Chase.

Especially because the show has been hinting that Karolina’s sexuality is going to play a major part in her storyline and that she doesn’t reciprocate Chase’s romantic feelings. However, that isn’t stopping the lacrosse player from quitting the team after his unapologetic teammates see nothing wrong about their attempted assault on her at the party. Quitting the team, he immediately runs over to Karolina’s where the two bond when she shows him her glowing power.

On the romance side of “Fifteen,” things are going much more smoothly for Alex and Nico. While the two initially disagree over what to do about their parents, eventually they get on the same page. Inspired by Karolina and Gert working together, Alex decides to be emotionally supportive of Nico when she goes to the police.

Her choice to turn her parents in is highlighted by a flashback in the beginning of the episode of Amy’s suicide. A pre-goth Nico is distraught when she finds her sister’s dead body, and rather than racing to comfort her child, Tina Minoru only locks her in the bedroom.

Ever since then, poor Nico believes her parents had a hand in her sister’s death and it definitely seems like it could be true. However, the man who visits her house that day to “take care of everything” ends up being a detective, informing the kids that their parents have paid off the cops.

Luckily, Gert brings Alex some encrypted files from Leslie Dean’s Gibborim laptop which gives the group some substantial proof. Turns out that Leslie has been abducting runaway kids every year, specifically those with no family, and sacrificing them.

Poor Karolina, the last believer in her parents, is heartbroken upon realizing that her life has been a lie. She isn’t the only one because Gert finally gets the chance to talk with her dinosaur (yet to be named Old Lace), and bond with her mother and father over the invention. Sadly, any leeway she makes in “Fifteen,” is wiped out when Tina comes by to casually threaten the two over leaving, which has them lashing out at Gert in fear.

As the kids drift farther apart from their families, it will be interesting to see how the parents react. Will they lash out angrily, as Victor Stein is known to do, or offer up remorse the way the Yorke’s do?

“Fifteen,” definitely makes it clear that most of the parents don’t want to be a part of this yearly sacrifice but are forced to remain in PRIDE for whatever reason is yet to be revealed.
