Disney’s multi-billion dollar deal to acquire FOX might be the catalyst for American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy’s exit from FX.

The creative mind behind FX’s American Horror Story — Ryan Murphy — is rumored to be looking to jump to the world of streaming services, thanks in part to Disney’s $52.4 billion deal to acquire FOX’s film and television studios, which includes FX.

According to Bloomberg, sources close to Murphy (who wish to remain unidentified) are claiming the creator/writer/director is looking to renegotiate his contract — which ends in 2018 — and is now considering offers from streaming giants Amazon and Netflix.

The reason for Murphy’s rumored desire to jump ship is said to be due to his desire for creative control and the creativity afforded by the streaming services, which stands in stark comparison to traditional television networks who must keep to certain guidelines. The types of language used and nudity shown are good examples of this.

Bloomberg also notes that Murphy’s reps are seeking a deal that rivals the one Netflix gave Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes who left ABC/Disney for the very same creative freedom Murphy is seeking. Rhimes’ deal is said to be valued around $100 million.

If Murphy were to leave FX for Netflix, network television would be losing one of its most creative minds to the ever-growing streaming service industry. This is a trend that could spell certain doom for the aforementioned “traditional television networks,” in a time where more and more homes are “cutting the cord” from cable providers.
